According to Articles 79, § 2, and 86, § 2, of the Act of 13 June 2005 on electronic communications, laying down that the universal service obligations concerning the directory enquiry services and directories may be lifted in a Royal Decree deliberated in the Council of Ministers, the BIPT Council submitted its opinion to the Minister on 24 May 2013. This opinion according to which the universal service obligations concerning the directory enquiry services and directories may be lifted was adopted after a market analysis, establishing that these services or similar services were largely accessible. The draft opinion was submitted for public consultation from 26 February to 29 March 2013.
BIPT publishes statistics of the electronic communications sector in 2012

Brussels, 30 May 2013 - Today BIPT has published the annual statistics relating to the telecoms sector. It shows that average prices have continued to decrease for fixed telephony (-11%) and mobile telephony (-5%). Belgium remains the leader as to the development of fixed high-speed broadband. Mobile broadband has reached almost the same level as fixed broadband penetration. The trend to buy multiple-play offers has continued.

Under Article 75 of the Act of 13 June 2005 on electronic communications the BIPT Council decided on 6 May 2013 to lift the universal service obligations relating to the provision of public pay phones. That decision was taken following a market analysis, which showed that those services or similar services were widely available. The draft opinion was submitted for public consultation from 26 February to 29 March 2013.
