The BIPT has published an update on the sustainability of the telecom networks in Belgium.

It specifically looks at the evolution of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and waste disposal over the past 5 years. The study shows that sustainability already is an important theme for the three telecom operators examined: Orange, Proximus and Telenet. During the 2018-2022 period their energy consumption dropped by 9% and the CO2 emissions by 19%. Operators continue to make efforts to further reduce consumption and CO2 emissions. In addition operators are also working on reusing and recycling set-top boxes and modems to reduce the waste mountain. Furthermore, it appears that the electricity consumption of the modems and set-top boxes at the end-user level is about the same as the consumption of the examined operators combined and therefore has an important impact.
